Round #1

Im going to start this a little earlier, because I have few things I have to take care of.

You will have until 4:20 p.m tomorrow to answer.

Riddle #1

In a Major League Baseball game a pitcher faced only 27 batters. Every batter he faced, he struck out. He allowed zero hits, and zero runs yet his team lost 4-0.

How Could This Be?

Good Luck

  1. This could be if a batter bats out of turn in the batting order....

  2. I have a question...

The riddle does not state whether or not he threw a complete game. Did he?

  3. They lost in extra innings

  4. The pitcher was making a relief appearance, not starting.

The starter gave up the 4 runs.

  5. 2 possibilities:

    1. The pitcher struck out 4 batters who ended up reaching on passed balls - they scored on passed balls later in the inning and finally the pitcher was taken out with 2 outs in the 8.

    2. The pitcher did exactly as you described but the game went extra innings. The original pitcher came out after 9, in the later innings the opposing team scored 4 runs and won.

  6. Alot of passed balls, or dropped strike 3's

  7. The game is still tied 0-0 at the end of the 9th inning. The pitcher does not come out to start the 10th inning and his team proceeds to lose 4-0.

  8. The 27th batter he faces reaches base via an uncaught 3rd strike/passed ball. The manager brings in a closer, who summarily surrenders the 4 runs contributing to the loss, and blows a save in the process. The first run is not charged to the pitcher since the runner reached base via an uncaught third strike/passed ball.

  9. I'm in deep trouble. I suck at riddles.

I'll guess now because it won't get any better the longer I wait: his team lost because he was taken out of the game after his miraculous 9-inning performance with the score tied 0-0. The relief pitching blew the game, giving up four runs.

  10. I cant give hints. The riddle is as is.

    Thats why its a riddle.

  11. The opposing team scored four runs against the starting pitcher without recording an out. The starter was removed and the reliever struck everyone out for the rest of the game.

    Please be more specific.

  13. And I didn't mean to say "save" i meant to say game. If they lost 4-0 there was never a save opportunity (obviously).

  14. The pitcher went 9 innings, left the game with a 0-0 tie and a reliever was brought in. The reliever was the pitcher of record for the loss.

  15. The starting pitcher pitches the 1st 9 innings, but the reliever gives up 4 runs in extra innings and loses the game. Thanks!

  16. more specific, sure. There were so many passed balls and dropped strike 3's that the bases were loaded and runs kept coming in. Eventually the other team takes the lead.
